Melbourne (/ˈmɛlbərn/, AU i/ˈmɛlbən/) is the capital and most populous city in the Australian state of Victoria, and the second most populous city in Australia and Oceania. The name "Melbourne" refers to the area of urban agglomeration (as well as a census statistical division) spanning 9,900 km2 (3,800 sq mi) which comprises the broader metropolitan area, as well as being the common name for its city centre. The metropolis is located on the large natural bay of Port Phillip and expands into the hinterlands towards the Dandenong and Macedon mountain ranges, Mornington Peninsula and Yarra Valley. Melbourne consists of 31 municipalities. It has a population of 4,347,955 as of 2013, and its inhabitants are called Melburnians.
Founded by free settlers from the British Crown colony of Van Diemen's Land on 30 August 1835, in what was then the colony of New South Wales, it was incorporated as a Crown settlement in 1837. It was named "Melbourne" by the Governor of New South Wales, Sir Richard Bourke, in honour of the British Prime Minister of the day, William Lamb, 2nd Viscount Melbourne. It was officially declared a city by Queen Victoria in 1847, after which it became the capital of the newly founded colony of Victoria in 1851. During the Victorian gold rush of the 1850s, it was transformed into one of the world's largest and wealthiest cities. After the federation of Australia in 1901, it served as the nation's interim seat of government until 1927.
Pacific National is one of Australia's largest rail freight businesses. Formed in February 2002 as a joint venture between Patrick Corporation and Toll Holdings, it is now a subsidiary of Asciano Limited.
In February 2002 National Rail's freight operations and rollingstock (owned by the Federal, New South Wales and Victorian Governments) were combined with FreightCorp (owned by the New South Wales Government) and sold to a joint venture between Patrick Corporation and Toll Holdings as Pacific National.
In February 2004 Pacific National purchased Australian Transport Network, operator of ATN Access and AN Tasrail. In August 2004 Pacific National purchased Freight Australia, giving Pacific National control of the Victorian non-urban rail track, excluding the interstate network which is controlled by the Australian Rail Track Corporation.
As part of the sale conditions the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission attached special conditions to the sale to ensure competition in the rail freight industry. The company was required to provide a 'starter pack' of locomotives, wagons, train paths, and freight terminals for a third party rail operator on the east-west route across the Nullarbor Plain. To fulfill this Pacific National sold nine refurbished G class locomotives to competitor SCT Logistics to allow it to operate its own services
Rail freight transport is the use of railroads and trains to transport cargo as opposed to human passengers.
A freight train or goods train is a group of freight cars (US) or goods wagons (UIC) hauled by one or more locomotives on a railway, transporting cargo all or some of the way between the shipper and the intended destination as part of the logistics chain. Trains may haul bulk material, intermodal containers, general freight or specialized freight in purpose-designed cars. Rail freight practices and economics vary by country and region.
When considered in terms of ton-miles or tonne-kilometers hauled per unit of energy consumed, rail transport can be more efficient than other means of transportation. Maximum economies are typically realized with bulk commodities (e.g., coal), especially when hauled over long distances. However, shipment by rail is not as flexible as by highway, which has resulted in much freight being hauled by truck, even over long distances. Moving goods by rail often involves transshipment costs, particularly when the shipper or receiver lack direct rail access. These costs may exceed that of operating the train itself, a factor that practices such as containerization aim to minimize.
Metro Trains Melbourne, known colloquially as simply 'Metro', is the franchise operator of the suburban railway network of Melbourne, Australia. Metro Trains Melbourne is a joint venture between the Hong Kong-based MTR Corporation (60%), John Holland Group (20%) and UGL Rail (20%).
Metro Trains Melbourne operates a fleet of 407 three-car train sets on 837 kilometres of track. There are sixteen regular service train lines and one special events train line. The train fleet travels over 30 million kilometres and provides more than 228 million customer boardings each year, over 14,000 services each week and carries over 415,000 passengers each weekday. Metro Trains Melbourne is also responsible for 215 railway stations and employs a workforce of 3,500 rail professionals including train drivers, mechanical and electrical engineers, network operations specialists and customer service representatives.
The actual railway tracks, infrastructure and rolling stock is owned by VicTrack on behalf of the State Government, and is leased to Public Transport Victoria which then sub-leases them to Metro Trains Melbourne. Metro Trains has faced criticism in the past and was voted the worst rail system in Australia in 2011.
The word cargo refers in particular to goods or produce being conveyed – generally for commercial gain – by ship, boat, or aircraft, although the term is now often extended to cover all types of freight, including that carried by train, van, truck, or intermodal container. The term cargo is also used in case of goods in the cold-chain, because the perishable inventory is always in transit towards a final end-use, even when it is held in cold storage or other similar climate-controlled facility.
Multi-modal container units, designed as reusable carriers to facilitate unit load handling of the goods contained, are also referred to as cargo, specially by shipping lines and logistics operators. Similarly, aircraft ULD boxes are also documented as cargo, with associated packing list of the items contained within. When empty containers are shipped each unit is documented as a cargo and when goods are stored within, the contents are termed as containerised cargo.

English - Since introducing their own intermodal service between Melbourne and Brisbane after Aurizon decided to stop carrying SCT wagons the Aurizon intermodal service, the train has gone from strength to strength. WIth the Aurizon decision to cease intermodal operations, there is plenty of scope for this train service to expand. Here is CSR 10 leading SCT 004, 001 and 002 at Airport West with an impressive load on 28th April 2017. It's amazing just how stupid some people are. Jumping onto moving freight trains doesn't make you "cool", it just confirms you're a fool. It's also very dangerous and a dumb way to die. It was so dark when I filmed this in 2009 I wasn't even aware it had happened at the time. It was only when reviewing the footage I noticed the idiot making his move. The seminar introduces City Logistics and describes recent models developed for improving the sustainability of goods movement in Melbourne, including a collaborative freight system for suppliers distributing goods to retailers as well as a Central Business District (CBD) routing system for couriers. The session was hosted by the Georgia Tech Physical Internet Center (https://www.picenter.gatech.edu). BRIEF ABSTRACT Distribution systems in metropolitan regions are typically characterized by suppliers operating their own vehicle fleets, distributing only their goods to their customers on a regular basis. Including - B737s, B747s, B777s, B787s, A330s, A350s & A380s! The night rush at Melbourne Airport contains some of the best movements we have. YMML is a curfew free airport, meaning that there's no restrictions at night as to when aircraft can operate in and out and a lot of airlines use that to their advantage. The rush is in full swing from 6pm all the way through to 12am and contains most of our A380 services and some exclusive aircraft that cannot be seen during the day. After dark is also the prime time for freight operations and can attract up to 3 747 freighters throughout the night. This compilation was filmed on a number of separate nights and ranges from 6pm to 12:30am. It also contains nearly all the night flights from a variety of different angles. The most notable aircraft ...
Starting at Richmond, I travel through to South Yarra and Caulfield, then through the Dandenong rail corridor, where we see the ongoing construction of SkyRail. I then change trains at Dandenong as the train I was on was going to Cranbourne. From there, I go all the way to Pakenham, where I see the (Up) QUBE Maryvale Paper Train hauled by CFCLA locomotives G532 and VL356 go by. Since this video was filmed, the level crossing at Main Street just before Pakenham Station had it's Westinghouse hybrid bells replaced with e-bells. Video of the Dandenong rail corridor pre-SkyRail: https://youtu.be/dzJvWzifg2s Date: 22nd November 2017.
A half hour special featuring freight trains recorded during my short stay near Bendigo, Victoria, where I met up and sampled the hospitality of Brad aka Greensleeves94 and family. Workings are captioned throughout the film, including locations. My thanks to Brad and Graeme White for their company on these trips, and also Alison and Kaitlin for their hospitality during my visit. Photos of the freights can be seen on my Flickr page www.flickr.com/chriseve1979.
Including - A330s, A350s, A380s, B747s, B757s, B777s, B787s! July has been another successful month for Melbourne Airport, with a number of new flights, aircraft upgrades and rare visitors. The most anticipated movement happened at the beginning of the month, that being Qatar Airways upgrading all their daily 777-300ER flights to A380s. Melbourne now has all 3 of the middle eastern giants flying here and what makes it even better is the fact that they're all here on the ground at the same time! Honeywell International's Boeing 757-200 payed Melbourne a visit as part of a tour. It arrived on a Friday evening and hung around for the weekend. B757s are incredibly rare at Melbourne which made its visit that much more special. July is peak period for Northern American flights in Australi...
English - Here is a drivers view from 10 years ago. Copied from ione of my earlier DVDs I produced back then. My introduction on the DVD says 2006 but it is actually February 2007. Route 96 was still in transition with a mix of B2, C1 and D2 trams on the route. Some of the stops have either changed from Safety Zones to Platform Stops or have been removed altogether. Much of the Melbourne landscape has also changed and the city is so much busier now in 2017 compared to 2007. This view is from B2 tram 2109. Filmed February 2007. This was one of the Strasburg railroads many Steam powered revenue freight trains in June 2013. Strasburg is the only railroad in the country where you can see a steam locomotive pulling a revenue freight train on a regular basis.
Australian Freight Watch The Hunter Valley The NSW Hunter Valley would have to be one of the busiest places I've ever seen when it comes to freight, grain & coal trains etc. This video shows just how many different kinds of trains you'd see in the Hunter Valley in a few hour period on a typical day. This video was filmed at 2 locations. Beresfield & Maitland. Filmed on Saturday 16th January 2016. Torrens River to Torrens Road (T2T) development of the Outer Ring Road in Greater Adelaide is in later stages of completion. The cutting beneath the Grange Rd Manton St & South Rd intersection is now fully excavated. The earth beneath the Port Road and South Rd Intersection is partially removed. The Rail Overpass is now carrying to tracks of commuter trains. We travel at ground level beneath the Urban Superway section of the North South Road to the intersection of South Rd with Grand Junction Rd. We go on the Grand Junction Rd Bridge over the Freight Railway Line at Dry Creek. The Bridge is adjacent to the Dry Creek Gas Turbine Electricity Power Station. This Freight Railway Line carries 80% of all freight between Melbourne and Perth.
Our penultimate day of our October tour, Day 6 and the short trip from Ash House Farm Guest House (highly recommended, plus its right next to the railway too! - http://www.ashhousefarm.com) to the station to spend the day filming. There wasn't as much freight as we were hoping for but for both myself and Steve, it was a new place to film/photograph from and apart from some drizzle the majority of the day was good for filming/photographing. Nice end to the day with a Class 90 hauling the 325 unit. We left around 4.30pm and headed south to Stafford where we would stay overnight before our final day at our favourite location, Tamworth. Enjoy.

English - This is mone of my favourite views! Melbourne in Autumn is really beautiful. This route 11 drivers view from West Preston to Victoria Harbour was filmed on a fantastic sunny autumn day in 2018. The weekday departure time was 1241pm from West Preston and the sun was in the correct position. The view from the Northern Suburbs gives a great view of the City Skyline as the tram runs down St Georges Road onto Brunswick St. With the new landscaping on St Georges Road, there is an open and bright feel to the area. It's a busy time of the year with the Australian Formula One Grand Prix at Albert Park and The Melbourne International Flower and Garden Show at The Carlton Gardens both on at the same time. The Route runs through West Preston and down along St Georges Road through Northcot...
This video starts at Mt Victoria station in the Blue Mountains , west of Sydney, NSW. We see what is now a thing of the past - electric loco hauled coal trains. In this case a loco swap is taking place. We also see a few other trains pass through the station. We then move further west and catch up with a ballast train near Newbridge. After some scenes of stations on the NE main line in Victoria, the remainder of the video is of two visits to Middle Footscray, in suburban Melbourne. The interstate freight lines pass through here, so as well as lots of passenger trains, we see freight trains of varying types and heading to WA, SA and NSW. The scene here has now changed totally, with the freight lines now bi-directional, and two new Regional Rail lines added. Enjoy.
